Manager Training - Should I do a Manager Mastermind?

Manager Training - Should I do a Manager Mastermind?

I put up a poll on my LinkedIn profile asking, "As a manager, how much training did you receive when you were new in the role? (I'm curious!) Expand your answer in the comments if you like."

Not surprising, I found that 33% (6 people) received No training, 61% (11 people) reported they received "very little, short hand-off," 6% (1 person) received a "fair amount, some continued support," and 0% (0 people) had received a "large amount, including standard work, etc."

The fact of the matter is, it is incredibly hard to train a new manager in a short period of time. This is because there are tangible management and leadership skills to teach, but also, there are those intangible things leaders do that are much harder to teach like presence, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, empathy, encouraging team members, tailoring their communication, trusting their gut, etc.

In addition, the word "management" often has a bad connotation. These days, there are many videos, memes, and info graphics that state that we should all be "leading" and "not managing." These messages imply or directly state that management means that people only care about results and not people. But this is not true about good managers.

Good managers actually practice BOTH management and leadership.

In this video I discuss this topic and share that I'm going to be putting out more videos that are specifically about various things that managers do, including the less visible things that we don't talk about that much. I love the idea of creating a "Manager Mastermind" course or group coaching experience, so I hope these videos will help me learn what you all want to know most about.

So please leave your management questions in the comments section. Let me know what you want to know, what you wish you knew more about, and what aspects of management still feel like a secret (or some make it look easy and you're wondering, why is this so hard?!), etc.
